Here at SimpleTire, we’ve gone through and found some of the best BMW M5 tires (including all-season, ultra-high-performance, and summer tires), then graded them all using our SimpleScore system into Best/Great/Good rankings. Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate - Best UHP Tire
Your BMW M5 needs a set of tires that can enable you to get the most out of its handling and braking performance, so a set of summer or ultra-high-performance (UHP) tires would be a logical first choice. We’re going to kick this list off with the Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate, which is a race-inspired UHP tire that’s simply one of the best on the market. Everything about the Eagle Exhilarate is centered around enthusiastic driving and the confidence that you need as you push the limits. Goodyear designed the Eagle Exhilarate with a tread compound that’s soft and sticky for a stubborn, decisive connection to the road. Goodyear’s ActiveGrip system and asymmetric tread are designed to deliver braking, steering response, and cornering that are all immediate and precise. Tread rigidity and resistance to deformation are key to good handling, and the Eagle Exhilarate is designed with a tread area and shoulder that are up to the job of resisting the inertia and forces of cornering. In the handling department, we rate the Eagle Exhilarate with a SimpleScore of 9.9. Whether you’re accelerating, braking, or cornering, traction in wet or dry weather is enhanced by all these elements for a SimpleScore of 9.9. Durability is another strong point of the Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate, thanks to its built-in rim protector, tread compound, and robust internal construction. Goodyear covers the Eagle Exhilarate with a 45,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty (worth noting by itself since many UHP tires don’t have a mileage warranty at all) and we rate this tire with a SimpleScore of 8.6 for longevity. Just be mindful of the fact that summer/UHP tires are the opposite of winter tires in the sense that their softer, stickier tread compound will get stiff and lose traction if temperatures are below 45 degrees.
2. Bridgestone Potenza RE050A - Best Summer tire
If you have a BMW M5, you’re going to want to get the most out of its performance envelope, the race-inspired Bridgestone Potenza RE050A is an excellent choice. For the grip you need when the streets (or tracks) are covered by a film of water, wide circumferential grooves, and specially designed block edges are there to inspire confidence, enough for a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction. You can enjoy braking, cornering, and steering response that are all top-notch with stiff sidewalls, specialized center rib, and tie bars across tread blocks that reduce tire deformation and tread squirm. We figure that’s enough for a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling. Durability is a strong suit as well; its polyester casing is enclosed by two steel belts and a spiral-wrapped nylon layer for durability and high-speed stability, along with a hard rubber sidewall filler. That’s all we needed to hear to give the tire a longevity SimpleScore of 8.3. Again, the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A is a summer tire and its softer, stickier tread formulation will stiffen up and lose traction on colder days. Like all summer tires, the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A should not be used if temperatures are below 45 degrees F.
3. Yokohama Advan Apex V601 - Great UHP tire
Next up on our list is the Yokohama Advan Apex V601, a great value in a summer/UHP tire for the BMW M5. Braking, cornering, control, and steering response are all first-rate with this tire, thanks to a silica-rich rubber compound, reinforced shoulder and sidewall for stiffness and reduced tread squirm, and a solid center rib, which all add up to a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling. We’re also impressed with the robust construction and long-wearing properties of the tread compound, which are enough for Yokohama to offer a 25,000 mile warranty (unusual for any UHP tire), for a SimpleScore of 8.1 for longevity. Wet and dry weather traction are also excellent, for a SimpleScore of 8.6.
4. Falken Azenis FK510 - Good UHP tire
We’re closing out this roundup with the Falken Azenis FK510, a great value in an ultra-high-performance tire that far exceeds expectations for its price point. You’ll enjoy precise cornering and braking performance with a semi-solid center rib, wide shoulder blocks, and lateral notches, enough for a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling. Wet and dry-weather grip are also fantastic thanks to circumferential grooves and angled grooves, for a traction SimpleScore of 8.8. The Azenis FK510 is designed with Falken’s 4D Nano system, which is an advanced tread compound and undertread construction for a SimpleScore of 7.8 for longevity.
