  • Nitto Terra Grappler G2 Tire Review

    Nitto Terra Grappler G2

Founded in 1949, Nitto Tire is a subsidiary of the Japanese tire firm – Toyo Tires. Nitto is a tire company that started with unique tire sizes which enthusiasts demanded and soon became a hit. The tire maker rolls out tires for a variety of vehicles including light trucks, SUVs, CUVs, passenger cars, competition, and SXSs. Among its fantastic range of all-terrain tires, the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 is highly sought after due to its impeccable grip and performance on tough terrains.

Made with a versatile rubber compound, the Terra Grappler G2 is the first ever all-terrain tire from Nitto that comes with a limited treadwear warranty of 65,000 miles for hard metric sizes and 50,000 miles for LT-metric and floatation sizes. The sharp edgy blocks with dense grooves and sipes and open shoulder design allow maximum traction on the most challenging surfaces. The Terra Grappler G2 also offers a quiet ride with its optimized variable pitch tread blocks that ensure a comfortable and pleasing ride at highway speeds. It is available in a wide range of 69 different sizes, ranging from 17 to 24 inches. While the Terra Grappler G2 promises superb adventure trails with its robust performance, does it actually deliver on the ground? Let’s find out in this Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tire review.

    Features and Benefits

All-terrain tires are engineered to have high-strength carcasses for adding solid resistance to tread against unpaved, rough roads. Let’s have a look at how the Grappler G2 is able to attain the performance it promises.

    • Rugged looks: Nitto tires are popular for their striking appearance and the Grappler G2 is no exception. Tough shoulder lugs extend down to the middle of the sidewall in two different patterns – thunderbolt and blade. The deep sipes on the tread last long so you continue to get the same look even when the tire wears. Block design with a host of grooves accentuates its manly characteristic.

    • Superb grip everywhere: An optimized tread pattern with zigzag grooves and deep sipes delivers excellent performance on challenging terrains. Water, mud, and slush are channeled out quickly from the wide grooves to ensure the traction is never lost. Solid shoulder lugs provide extra biting edges in tough, off-road conditions. Furthermore, the variable pitch tread blocks ensure the noise and vibrations are reduced to a minimum at highway speeds.

    • Max value, longer wear: The use of a new rubber compound ensures the tread of the Grappler G2 offers immense strength while a solid build helps negate cuts, chips, and snags on rough terrains. The all-terrain tread allows for optimal pressure distribution across the contact patch and resists uneven wear. The limited tread life warranty of up to 65,000 miles underlines the long life expectancy of the Grappler G2 tire line.

    Pros and Cons

Before we have our final say, let’s have a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the Grappler G2.

    Pros

    • Aggressive tread design and sidewall makes it aesthetically appealing
    • Reinforce coupling joints increase block edge rigidity
    • Staggered shoulder lugs for extra biting edges
    • Special rubber compound for longer tread life
    • Optimized tread design with a block pattern for maximum traction and strong grip
    • Class-leading limited tread life warranty of up to 65,000 miles

    Cons

    • Not the best on highly muddy trails
    • Not a great option for rock crawling

When I first had these installed, they seemed great. Dry and Rain traction was decent - I don't ever expect Pilot S traction on an oversized truck tire. I had some 35x12.5R20s installed on my lifted Silverado. Pros: - Comfortable Ride for an All-Terrain Tire. - Quiet road Noise at City & Highway speeds. - Nice looking sidewall and tread pattern. Cons: - Look up "Nitto Terra Grappler G2 Vibration" and go down the rabbit-hole. - After replacing Wheel Bearings, Upper & Lower Control Arm Assys, Driveshaft, Suspension and more - I got new tires, and the vibration at 65+ went away by 90%. (Note: This started at about 40-50% treadlife left. Some people get it right away I've read). - I made it about 38k Miles out of the 50k Warranty (round to 75%), before I was at 3/32ish of tread left. I was "Pro-rated" a 7% refund after I provided the installation mileage receipts, rotation receipts, etc.

For the first 20k miles, these seemed alright. After that, I started getting a vibration at 65+ miles per hour. I read into more and more and more, replaced both Wheel Hub Assys, Both Upper & Lower Control Arm Assys, Drive Shaft Assy, Suspension, and Multiple rebalances / alignments - and after taking these off and getting a different brand tire - 80% of the vibration went away. A truck with 35x12.5R20 tires is never going to ride like a Cadillac at high speeds, but lord was this frustrating to deal with. Just google "Nitto Terra Grappler G2 Vibration" and you'll go down the rabbit hole of truck / jeep forums like I did. I also only made it about 38k miles with these. The warranty is 50k, and after providing installation mileage and rotation receipts, tire gauge pictures, etc. I was given back 7%. (while I was only about 75% of the way through). Overall I think Nitto is an OK company, but I won't be purchasing the brand again.

After I blew through my Ridge Grapplers in 17k miles, I went through these Terra Grappler G2s in approximately 38k. Let's start with the reviews on these... I don't know if I got a bad run of tires, but after replacing Upper & Lower Control Arm assys on both sides, Wheel Hub Assys on both sides, rebalancing, fresh alignments, rotations every 5k or less miles, new suspension - And visiting the shop at least 10 times over the past 1-1/2 years.... I still had a vibration at 65+ speeds on the highway... Even driving a Chevy Silverado 1500 and knowing they can potentially have torque converter issues, thankfully I didn't spend 5k to replace that... it was these tires. After getting a new set of Falken Wildpeaks, I took my truck up to 80mphs and it rode like a cloud. Onto the "warranty" these tires offer... As I stated going through these tires in approximately 38k miles (by the way - if you think that "this guy is full of crap", I would be happy to send you the installation, rotation, mileage, and other receipts that I provided for the warrantyclaim :) ). Anyways - I made it through approximately 75% of the 50k Warranty. After providing ALL of the receipts, pictures, etc. Nitto prorated me at a 7% credit refund. Better than nothing? Sure. Does Nitto make decent tires? Yeah, I guess you could say that. Will I ever purchase a pair again after the vibration issues and such I endured? No sir. Purchase at your own risk.

Traction is a big deal on my farm truck that I drive daily. The Nitto Terra Grappler doesn't fool around with traction. I always feel confident about my connection with the earth. Noise on the road is also minimal and the ride is good as well, for a 12 year old farm truck. I expect they will provide good traction for about 2 years in my conditons.
