1. Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus - Best UHP All-Season tire
Let’s start this list off with one of our favorite UHP all-season tires, the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus from Continental. When Continental developed the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus, the goal was a tire that would present no compromises in performance vs traction, ride quality, and noise levels. In other words, a tire that can offer year-round grip with the overall handling, cornering, braking, and steering response that meets the standards of a UHP tire. That’s all, of course, along with the kind of tenacious, consistent grip that will reliably get you through all kinds of weather conditions. The Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus starts looking like an even better value when you bear in mind that most UHP and summer use a softer, stickier tread formulation that will harden and lose traction below 40-45 degrees, which is when they have to be removed and exchanged for all-season tires. Continental expanded on the success of the ExtremeContact DWS06 and gave it some upgrades in just about every area, starting with the Sport+ Tech package that delivers confident responsiveness and thrilling cornering ability. Reinforced 2-ply sidewalls and macroblocks in the tread are designed for handling that’s sharp and direct, for an outstanding SimpleScore of 9.9 in that category. There’s also an advanced silica-enriched tread compound for long wear and great wet-weather traction. In rainy or light wintry weather, circumferential grooves, sweeping lateral grooves, and X-sipes give the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus an advantage in grip for a traction score of 9.8. Continental covers the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty (unlike most UHP tires), for a SimpleScore of 9.2 in the longevity department.
2. Falken Azenis FK460 A/S - Great UHP All-Season tire
Next up is another great UHP all-season tire, the Falken Azenis FK460 A/S. Here at SimpleTire, almost everything in the Falken line has made a good impression on our team for some time now, and the Azenis FK460 A/S is no exception. The Falken Azenis FK460 A/S is a tire that gives you confidence with a consistent grip in all kinds of weather thanks to its advanced 4D nano tread compound. It’s just intuitive that the performance and traction of most tires decrease as tread depth wears down, but the innovative Emerging Grooves system of the Azenis FK460 A/S is designed so the grooves open up and expand to keep delivering grip. The Canyon Groove design and circumferential grooves with chamfered edges offer stubborn performance in wet or wintry conditions, designed to work as a system to provide the grip you need. SimpleScore for traction: 8.6. Thanks in part to the wear-resistant design of the 4D Nano tread formulation, Falken covers the Azenis FK460 A/S with a 50,000 mile warranty, rating a SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity. Steering response, cornering, road manners, and braking performance are all precise and immediate with this tire, for a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling. We also need to mention here that the Azenis FK460 A/S is refined and quiet on the highway, keeping road noise to a minimum with acoustically tuned grooves to cancel certain frequencies and cut wind noise.
3. Bridgestone Potenza Sport - Best UHP tire
Our choice for a dedicated UHP tire is the Bridgestone Potenza Sport. The Potenza Sport is designed to cover all the bases: consistent traction and quiet, refined ride quality, along with a confident, exuberant driving experience on wet or dry pavement. Bridgestone designed the Potenza Sport with a grippy silica-rich tread formulation that offers excellent mechanical adhesion with the pavement, molded into a performance-oriented tread pattern optimized to ensure the most tread area in contact with the road. Four wide circumferential grooves cut through standing water and route it through and behind the contact patch to boost wet–weather performance and avoid hydroplaning. For cornering response and wet-weather traction, a dense pattern of 3D sipes enhances tread stiffness, and a randomized tread pitch ensures low noise on the highway by negating certain resonances and frequencies. After doing our calculations, that comes out to a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling and 9.9 for traction. The Potenza Sport does fall behind a little in the rankings regarding longevity, with a SimpleScore of 7.3. The Potenza Sport does not come from Bridgestone with a mileage warranty (most UHP tires don’t) and isn’t designed for winter conditions. On tires like this, their softer, stickier tread formulation will stiffen up and lose traction in colder weather. Like all UHP and summer tires, the Potenza Sport shouldn’t be used for temperatures below 40-45 degrees F.
4. Toyo Proxes Sport A/S - Great UHP All-Season tire
Here at the SimpleTire team, it’s been no secret to us that Toyo products offer great value, and the Proxes Sport A/S is right up there with the rest of Toyo’s line in that regard. The Toyo Proxes A/S Sport is a tire that can offer all-season, year-round performance along with direct and precise steering, short braking distances, and good cornering ability. Our SimpleScore for traction is a solid 8.9, with its multi-wave sipes, angled grooves, and circumferential grooves that work as a system for enhanced grip on wet, dry, or snowy pavement. Handling is another area where this tire is firmly in the plus column, thanks to a contact patch that’s optimized to put the most rubber in contact with the road, a specialized rib design, and a silica-rich tread compound (SimpleScore: 9.1). The Proxes Sport is covered by a 40,000 mile warranty, enough to register a SimpleScore of 8.3 for longevity. Overall SimpleScore average for the Toyo Proxes Sport A/S is 8.6.
5. Kumho Ecsta PS91 - Great UHP tire
Let’s wrap this list up with one more UHP tire, the Ecsta PS91 from Kumho. The Kumho Ecsta PS91 is an ultra-high-performance tire that’s a great choice for the torque, horsepower, and handling properties of sporty coupes and crossovers. The Ecsta PS91 gets a SimpleScore of 8.5 for handling thanks to the enhanced stiffness of its tread blocks, C-Cut 3D design, and notched, continuous center rib. The Ecsta PS91 uses Kumho’s advanced tread compound enriched with carbon black, silica, and Max Grip Performance resins, along with circumferential and lateral grooves for a SimpleScore of 8.5 for traction. The Ecsta PS91 doesn’t do quite as well when it comes to longevity, with a SimpleScore of 7.7 but it’s important to remember that the Ecsta PS91 is a dedicated UHP tire with no treadwear warranty. The softer, stickier tread compound of many UHP tires isn’t designed for colder temperatures as it will stiffen up and lose traction. Most tire manufacturers advise against using UHP or summer tires if temperatures are below 40-45 degrees F.
