When we looked at reviews for handling, the DriveGuard Plus ranks a solid 9.9 thanks to its asymmetric tread pattern and stable, rigid tread face that all deliver confident, predictable cornering, braking, control, and steering response. All in all, this is a Grand Touring tire that you can count on for a quiet, refined ride, excellent wear characteristics, great handling ability, and consistent year-round traction.

2. Pirelli P Zero AS Plus 3 - Best UHP All-Season tire

Next up in the 245/40R19 tire size is the Pirelli P Zero AS Plus 3, an all-season tire that’s designed from the ground up for enthusiastic performance along with dependable year-round all-season traction. Pirelli engineered the P Zero All Season Plus 3 with an advanced polymer-enhanced tread formulation that’s upgraded for durability and long wear. Internally, the P Zero All Season Plus 3 features a twin steel belt package, a polyester casing, and polyamide reinforcement plies for high-speed stability as well as wear properties. Pirelli covers the P Zero All-Season Plus 3 with a 50,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty. With that all taken into account, we give the Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus 3 an excellent SimpleScore of 8.9 for longevity. Year-round grip also gets high marks with this tire, with an asymmetric tread pattern that’s designed with a minimal void area that puts the most rubber in contact with the road. You can get the confidence of excellent performance in wet or wintry conditions thanks to a variety of sipes, including full-depth 3D sipes in select tread blocks, helping to chalk up a best-in-class SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. Enhanced steering response, braking, and cornering all benefit from larger pitch-sequenced tread blocks and reinforced shoulders, for a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling. The composite SimpleScore for the Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus 3 is 9.5.

3. Continental PureContact LS - Best All-Season tire

Another excellent candidate for a premium all-season tire in the 245/40R19 tire size is the Continental PureContact LS. If you’ve had much experience with Continental tires, you probably already know what kind of tire you’re getting with the PureContact LS. The PureContact LS garners an overall SimpleScore average of 9.6, so let’s unpack that a little. The Continental PureContact LS is designed to deliver razor-sharp handling, road manners, and year-round traction paired with the sort of low noise and luxurious ride that’s more in line with a Grand Touring tire. A solid center rib is designed for great driver feedback and steering response, and stable tread blocks in the asymmetric tread pattern all weigh into the PureContact LS’s cornering and steering feedback, helping to pull in a SimpleScore of 9.4 for handling. The PureContact LS’s design also means great wear properties, too. Next-generation technology such as temperature-activated polymers in the tread compound means excellent traction, effective noise suppression, and long wear (with a 70,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty) – SimpleTire’s SimpleScore for longevity with this tire is a solid 9.7. Continental’s +Silane additives in the tread compound boost traction in rainy or snowy conditions. That’s along with circumferential grooves, sweeping grooves, “traction grooves” that trap snow to provide snow-on-snow friction, and a dense pattern of sipes in the shoulders. That all adds up to a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction.

4. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV - Best Winter tire

“Hakkapeliitta” is a word that most Americans have likely never run across…it's Finnish for that country’s 16th-century cavalry troops, in case you were wondering. Nokia is a Finland-based tire manufacturer (yes, the same parent company as Nokia phones) with decades of experience in designing winter tires that are up to the challenges of safely navigating a driver through a Scandinavian winter. Here at SimpleTire, we’ve been impressed with Nokian tires and the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV for some time. If an ice storm comes through and leaves your roads treacherously slick, you’re probably going to find that tires with studs are the only thing that can safely get you through it. The Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV is pre-drilled so it’s easy to install optional studs (check your local and state laws for the legality of studded tires). Its stud pattern is strategically designed to deliver the best traction while keeping noise and impact on pavement surfaces to a minimum. For control and traction that’s secure and consistent, its tread pattern is designed around a system of angled, sweeping grooves and a dense network of sipes. Its rubber formulation is engineered to stay flexible in subfreezing weather, helping to bring in a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. As you’d probably expect, this tire is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service. Longevity is also a real plus with the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV, with its tough internal construction, tough Aramid-reinforced sidewall, and a durable rubber compound for a 9.1 SimpleScore in that category. Cornering, braking, and control are all enhanced with a rigid sidewall, shoulder, and tread face, enough for a SimpleScore of 8.9 for handling. It’s also worth remembering that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV is also designed for low rolling resistance, saving fuel over the tire’s service life.

5. Kumho Ecsta PA51 - Great All-Season tire

Here’s another all-season tire in the 245/40R19 size that’s designed for long wear, low noise, a forgiving ride, short braking distances, and handling that’s crisp and responsive. The Kumho Ecsta PA51 delivers all-season performance along with the kind of responsiveness, cornering, and overall handling that you’d expect from a UHP tire. The Ecsta PA51 helps mitigate hydroplaning on wet roads with wide circumferential grooves that route standing water through and behind the tire’s contact patch. Wide shoulder blocks are reinforced for the forces and inertia of hard maneuvers, for excellent cornering ability (and a SimpleScore of 9.4 in handling). Road manners, steering response, and straight-line stability all get a boost from a solid center rib. Kumho designed the PA51 with an advanced, custom-blended tread compound for long, even wear along with superb traction and stiffness for enhanced cornering. Kumho backs the Ecsta PA51 with a 45,000 mile warranty. When the weather turns snowy, there’s a combination of sipes and specially designed tread blocks that deliver the grip you need. SimpleScore for traction is 8.9, and the SimpleScore for longevity is 8.6 with an overall average SimpleScore average of 8.8. Don’t be spooked by the Kumho Ecsta PA51’s more affordable price point; that doesn’t mean you have to give away any serious tradeoffs in performance or quality.

Let’s wrap things up with the Cooper ProControl, a versatile premium all-season tire that’s a great choice for a whole range of sedans, minivans, and crossovers. Internal design details of the Cooper ProControl include a polyester casing with an angled steel belt package, and nylon reinforcement cap for excellent stability at highway speed, high turnup at the sidewall, and a durable, long-wearing tread compound. Cooper covers the ProControl with a best-in-class 70,000 mile warranty, which gives it an unbeatable SimpleScore rating of 9.8 in the longevity department. The profile and footprint are designed for an even distribution of vehicle weight and the forces of braking and cornering, for a SimpleScore of 8.6 for handling. What that means for your driving experience is cornering and handling performance that’s precise, secure, and direct. Wet-weather grip comes from a combination of circumferential grooves and lateral grooves that divert water away from the tire’s contact patch to fight hydroplaning, and its innovative sipes are designed so they will expand and widen, continuing to deliver extra traction as the tire wears down. There’s a higher density of sipes at the tire’s center ribs to help boost grip in low-friction snow and slush – we give the Cooper ProControl a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction.
